Customize your DNS

Most likely, your access to Sci-hub is blocked by your Internet Service Provider. But you can easily bypass it by customizing your DNS instead (it is legal). The easiest way is to use DoH (DNS via HTTPS) on your navigator but you can also change your IPv4 configuration.

DoH on Firefox

Firefox > Parameters > search "DNS" > Parameters > scroll down, click 'activate DNS via HTTPS' and you could select "cloudflare"

DoH on Chrome

Chrome > Parameters > Privacy and security > Security > Use secure DNS turn on > with custom > Cloudflare

IPv4 on Windows

Watch this video or open network and sharing center > click on your connection > properties > Internet Protocol IPv4 > properties and replace the DNS fields with the one from OpenDNS or Google.
OpenDNS
Preferred : 208.67.222.222
Alternate : 208.67.220.220
(optional) for IPv6: Preferred: 2620:0:ccc::2
(optional) for IPv6: Alternate: 2620:0:ccd::2
Google (IPv4) Preferred : 8.8.8.8

IPv4 on Mac

Apple's instructions
OpenDNS
(IPv4) Preferred : 208.67.222.222
Google DNS
(IPv4) Preferred : 8.8.8.8

Free online proxys

You can access sci hub and libgen through free online proxys but I do not recomment it because it often fails and it is not illegal to browse a website like Sci-hub or Libgen.

Tor network

You can always access the servers using the Tor network - you will need to download a software but it is free!
Download Tor browser and check the sci-hub servers above through the browser. Be sure to request a location that does not block Sci-hub (like the Netherlands).
You could also consider a free VPN to download like Windscribe before accessing the forbidden websites.

Other aggregators

Here are websites also updating a list of sci-hub servers.

I cannot find my article!

If in English, I am sure your article is on Sci-Hub / Libgen. Start by searching the title on the Libgen servers rather than Sci-Hub's. On Sci-Hub, the search by DOI/PMID works much better, but many DOI/PMID are simply wrong. All DOIs starts by 10. (not http). Search the exact title on Crossref (search metadata) and Pubmed and use those correct DOI/PMID in Sci-Hub (sometimes you get both a DOI and a PMID and only one works). When you get 'bad gateway' to your request, sometimes, just try again.

Here you can access to most scientific books (actually, most books).

Illegal but fair?

Of course it is, and to understand why, I recommend to read the following writings
  • Bodo, 2016
  • A history of the current crisis
  • Chopin, 2017
  • Why Science should be free?

Does scientific knowledge fall under intellectual property laws?

Under section 107 of the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement. It includes reproductions for purposes such as “criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research." So we should be able to access sci-hub legally, provided we access it for research purposes, which could be made clear by putting a disclaimer to grant access to sci-hub.

So far, courts have been interpreting the "fair use case" differently, condemning Sci-Hub. Many intellectuals argue that science should be public and therefore free of intellectual property, at least for the matter of diffusion of the knowledge. Some authors advocate for civil disobedience: e.g. the Guerilla Open Access Manifesto (the author, Aaron Swartz, faced so much legal retaliation that he commited suicide).

    I want to help

    What can you do?
  • If you cannot find an article on Sci-Hub, but were able to find it somewhere else, please upload this rare item! To do so, 1) go on Libgen's upload page using the username genesis and password upload, 2) select the file on your computer and 3) provide the correct DOI/PMID from Crossref/Pubmed.
  • Keep me updated if you find new servers (my email is adrien dot chopin at gmail dot com).
  • Decide not to review abusive journals and sign the petition: The Cost of Knowledge
  • Check whether a journal is green in the SHERPA/RoMEO base before submitting, editing or reviewing
  • Share your own articles on public repositories (see list above)
  • Avoid Open Access predatory journals. Beall's controversy list references those journals and is archived here (it was suddenly closed in 2017, potentially after OMICS publisher threatened for a 1$-billion lawsuit / see also this).
  • Download various encyclopedic series to preserve them
